New releases for Windows

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014

We are currently planning to update our primary builds. Next to the new Ubuntu LTS release we have two Windows builds and one machine for Mac OS X, which are in need of a general overhaul. A first casualty will be the Universal binaries on OS X: the new build machine will only build for Intel architectures.

Another issue at hand is the binary compatibility of our new builds on Windows with existing plugins for Instant Reality written on Windows. So far we have compiled everything using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. We currently have an open debate internally whether to move to Visual Studio 2012 or 2013 directly and invite you to pitch in: please send us an eMail or join us in the forums if you are developing or plan to develop for the Instant Reality platform, whether it’d be InstantIO hardware plugins or X3D node pools, and tell us which tools you use on Windows. Thanks!

Connecting X3DOM with InstantIO

Wednesday, September 11th, 2013

Back in June we’ve presented a prototype of a new RESTful interface to exchange graphics based data values across networks at Web3D 2013. This interface can be used to query data from a running application, modify or use it to display something. Said prototype is implemented inside InstantIO, the hardware component of Instant Reality which supports more than 40 devices. For the first time now, you’re able to query hardware information from InstantIO through Javascript from a browser. We’ve set up a tutorial on how to connect a Oculus Rift HMD to an X3DOM application: X3DOM renders a scene as distorted stereo image but connects via REST API to a local InstantIO server, opens a WebSocket connection on the orientation field of the Oculus and uses the incoming data to rotate the view!

You can do this of course with arbitrary hardware (think of the LEAP support or the Kinect), but please bear in mind that this is only a preview at the moment.

You can find the tutorial here. Enjoy!

InstantReality and X3DOM at SIGGRAPH 2013

Thursday, July 18th, 2013

Join the dev-team of Instant Reality and X3DOM at the exhibition floor of SIGGRAPH 2013 in Anaheim. We’re located in booth #233 and will show you the latest and greatest in X3D web-technology, fusing desktop and web environments to create streaming applications. We will also bring along new hardware toys which have been added to Instant Reality, as well as a demonstration of the latest progressive mesh compression technique we’re developing right now. See you there!

InstantReality 2.3.0 Released

Thursday, July 18th, 2013

We’re happy to announce the release of version 2.3.0, featuring LAS and BinaryGeometry loaders, a licensable OpenJT loader (you can already load JT files and try it out) and a new texture node to load Polynomial Texture Maps. More importantly however, we welcome the Leap Motion and Oculus Rift to our supported hardware family. On Windows, you can also access the updated OpenNI and NiTE 2.0 node, NI2. Tutorials are ready at your disposal! Get your copy here:

Web3D 2013

Friday, June 14th, 2013

Meet the InstantReality team at Web3D 2013! We’re excited to present a new REST interface integrated into InstantReality, which enables efficient data exchange between (web-)applications. As usual, we have new hardware support up our sleeves and will present an X3DOM scene using an Oculus Rift HMD with headtracking, which is supplied by the InstantIO server component via WebSockets. No plugins required! See you in San Sebastian!

New REST interface for efficient data exchange

Friday, June 14th, 2013

The next version of InstantReality will contain a preliminary version of a new REST interface, which allows X3D applications to exchange data (i.e. field values) with other applications, such as X3DOM web apps or even your own local renderer.

InstantIO, the hardware server of InstantReality, is the first component to be equipped with this interface. Application writers can get access to hardware devices and their data with HTTP commands or WebSockets, allowing for integration of devices such as Microsoft Kinect or the Leap inside a web application.

InstantReality at Siggraph 2012

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

Come meet the developer team at the exhibition floor of Siggraph 2012 in Los Angeles in booth #234! We brought some new Kinect goodies with us and will show a fusion of InstantReality as a service for out-of-core rendering with X3DOM. It’ll blow your mind! For those who can’t wait to see it, here is a 14.5 million triangle model paged to an iPad.
