mobile augmented reality
Overview
The latest developments in Fraunhofer IGD's instantvision enables high quality Augmented Reality (AR) applications even on mobile computers. New markerless tracking algorithms guarantee accurate positioning and orientation while providing high framerates.
These features are included in instantreality framework. Developers do not have to struggle with low-level programming anymore but can concentrate on the Augmented Reality application itself. This enables even non-programmers like designers developing AR applications.
Case Studies
iTACITUS is a complete mobile information system for cultural visitors funded by the European Union. Its Augmented Reality Module is based on instantreality and instantvision. The system will be introduced in summer at Reggia Venaria Reale near Turin. It will feature the visualization of missing paintings and historic buildings as Augmented Reality overlays. Thus robust markerless tracking is a requirement for an user friendly tourist application. The used hardware is the Sony UX1XN ultra mobile PC.
Rittal asked Fraunhofer IGD to develop a prototype application for the maintainance of large hosting systems. The system enables a service engineer to see a server's statistics and problems through the display of an ultra mobile PC. The dynamic information seems to stick on the front of the server cabinet. It shows information about temperature, current consumption, etc. The application was presented at CeBIT 2008.
